Where to stay

Book the neighborhood, then the hotel

My booking philosophy is simple: in Taiwan the neighborhood decides your trip and the hotel just has to not ruin it. Below are the places I actually put people, including my own relatives, ordered roughly by budget. Every pick states who it suits, because a great hostel and a great honeymoon hotel are not competing.

Two general rules before the picks. First, Taiwan's hotels are honest: the photos are rarely lies and the cleanliness floor is high, so midrange here buys what luxury buys in many countries. Second, weekend and holiday pricing is real; the same room can double on a Saturday or around Lunar New Year, so if your dates flex, flex them.

The hostel that ruins other hostels: plant-filled loft lounge, serious breakfast, staff who plan your day trips with you. The private rooms are a legitimate budget-couple play too.

On the 10-day route

Down the west coast, the pattern is simple: Sun Moon Lake deserves the splurge night if you have one in the budget, because waking up on the water is the entire point of staying. In Tainan, stay inside the old West Central district lanes so the dawn beef soup is a walk, not a ride. Kaohsiung rewards staying near the Love River or Yanchengpu for the Pier-2 and ferry life. Named picks with full notes are in the itinerary as it grows; the cities are low-pressure bookings where midrange rarely disappoints.
